Web Site Management: Guestbooks
Have you ever visited a web site, liked what you saw and wanted to leave a quick note to the webmaster to let him know your feelings? Did you find a great website which entertained you for hours, and you felt like you had to let the person who created it know? Or did you spend the entire afternoon reading someone's wonderful content, which was so great that you just had to tell him what you thought?
If so, I'll bet you've looked for the guestbook, which is the traditional place to communicate those thoughts. I don't know who started the concept of the guestbook on web sites, but it's a great idea. It is a quick and easy way for your visitors to leave a little comment (and sometimes a not-so-little comment) about your site.
Have you ever been to a site which elicited these feelings only to find there was no guestbook? If you are anything like me, you felt a little disoriented, perhaps even a bit angry. You just wanted to let someone know they did something good, and they have not given you a way to do so.
Some webmasters will tell you that guestbooks are not important. Others will claim they are a waste of time and effort. I've even heard some say the "real estate (space)" on the page would be better put to use promoting a product or something. These comments make me feel a little sad, as these webmasters prove by their comments that they don't really understand the internet or the web.
You see, the internet is not about making tons of money (although making tons of money would be great). It's not about awesome storefronts, pay-to-surf programs or even the newest technology. The internet is not about these things.
What the internet is about is communication. Purely and simply, the purpose of the internet is to communicate. This morning, when I had to refill a prescription I jumped onto my favorite prescription web site and punched in my renewal instructions ... that's communication. Later in the day, I researched some products ... that's communication. Tonight, I may even make a purchase from my favorite shopping site ... and that's also communication.
Those webmasters who make it easy for their visitors to communicate will find their sites prosper by whatever measure they deem important. Conversely, webmasters who impede communications will find their sites are not nearly as successful as they could be.
How does a guestbook fit into this? It gives your visitors not only a standard, globally understood way to communicate with the webmaster, but it also gives them a way to communicate with all of the visitors to the web site. Your visitors can stop for a minute to congratulate you on your good works ... in public for all to see. This is communication at it's best.
A good guestbook script has the following features:
- It must be very configurable, so that the webmaster can leave plenty of things for his visitors to communicate.
- A good guestbook always sends an acknowledgement back to the person who signed (assuming he left his email address).
- The best scripts also send an email to the webmaster so he knows someone signed.
- A guestbook absolutely must be moderated. Any guestbook which does not allow for moderation must be discarded.
- The better scripts will filter out curse words.
When you design your site, you should include an easily found link to the guestbook on every single page. Believe me, if your visitors want to say something good about your site you should make it easy for them to do so. The link can be anywhere ... just be sure to place it in the same location on every page.
Once a guestbook has been selected and installed, it must be maintained. This is where the game gets a little interesting. Here's what happens.
1) Someone visits your site, likes what he sees and navigates to your guestbook. He writes a comment and submits his entry.
2) Your guestbook script should send him an acknowledgement (assuming he included his email address). The acknowledgement must not be a blatant advertisement for your affiliate programs or products. It's purpose is to thank your visitors for their comments and to remind them to return to your site. You can also let them know of other features of your site that they may find of interest.
3) NEVER send more than one email to your visitor from a guestbook signing. One email is polite. More than one email is spam. The only exception to this is when the visitor specifically asks you a question or asks for your response.
4) NEVER add your visitor's email to your mailing list because he signed your guestbook. This is spam.
5) Your script should also send you an email so that you know someone has signed. Read the message and determine if it is appropriate for your site. If so, add the message. If not, delete it.
You should moderate your guestbook, as you want to be sure that only comments that are appropriate end up being made public. This is a very critical part of guestbook maintenance. Guestbooks are intended to positively reinforce your work - not tear it down. You can feel free to delete any and all negative messages.
Another type of message that I usually delete immediately is the pure advertisement. Guestbooks can provide links back to sites, but that is not their primary purpose. Leave advertisements to classified and free-for-all link pages.
I would be very cautious about making any changes to anything in a guestbook. This is a place for visitors to post comments (generally positive ones) about your site and it's contents ... it is not your editorial page.
Properly used, a guestbook is a useful and easy way to enhance your site and make it more friendly to your visitors. These scripts give your visitors a way to publicly post positive comments about your works for the world to see. That in itself can be very useful and helpful.

WEB-DESIGN GUIDELINESTim NorthIt's not enough to know *how* to create a web site, you also need to know what makes a *good* web site. Think back on some of the web sites you've visited recently. Were you impressed by all of them? Probably not. Many web sites are technically fine, but fail on aesthetic grounds.
The guidelines below will help you to create web sites that are user-friendly and will be well received.
1. Content, content, content! The single most important element in any successful web site is good content. You must have content that is:
* interesting;
* informative; and
* regularly updated.
Without this, it will be difficult to convince people to visit your site again and again. Lots of flashy colours and animated images may look fun the first time, but it's not enough to keep people coming back to your site. Only good content can do that.
2. Don't overuse character styles such as bold face and italics as this can make your site seem amateurish. Also, underlining should be avoided at all costs as visitors will mistake underlined text for a clickable link.
Similarly, don't wildly vary the size of your type unless you have good reason.
3. Don't abuse your colours. Too many colours, or overly garish colours, are one of the easiest ways to spot amateur web sites. Also make sure that you choose a readable colour scheme. White text on a black background may look cool, but it's tough to read, particularly with small text.
4. Leave lots of blank space. Text on computer screens is hard to read at the best of times, so don't cram in your text. Start lots of new paragraphs, and leave plenty of space between objects. Headings or horizontal rules are a good way to do this.
5. Use less text per page. The web is primarily a visual medium. Screen after screen of text is dull and unlikely to be read. Try to limit the amount of text on any page to a few paragraphs by breaking long pages into several smaller pages.
6. Don't assume that other people will see what you see. There are many things that can make your web page look different to what you expected:
* Different browsers, even different versions of the same browser, can display your pages quite differently.
* Some people use a screen that is 640 pixels wide; others have screens that are 800, 1,024 or 1,200 pixels wide. They may all see your site quite differently.
* Some computers may not display as many colours as yours.
* The fonts that you used may not be installed on other people's computers.
* Other people may have different browser settings to you.
* etc.
The moral of this story is twofold:
a. Don't waste your time trying to get the layout "just right" as it will probably look different on other people's machines anyway.
b. Test your pages as widely as possible. For example, look at them on different machines and browsers, change the browser's settings, use fewer colours, use different fonts, turn off images. Does your web site still look okay in all of these situations?
Remember, it's not enough to make a web site, you have to make a good one. With over two billion other web pages out there at the moment, you'll have to work hard to ensure that yours stands out from the crowd. Good design and good content will help you do this. Good luck!

Rubber Soul
Rubber Soul
Rank 'em how you like, Rubber Soul is an undeniable pivot point in the Fab Four's varied discography no matter where, or how, you first heard it. The album was softened up in its original 12-song American edition to jibe with the Dylan/Byrds folk-rock sound, as well as squeeze money from the Parlophone catalog. The 14-song U.K. edition--the version now available on compact disc--is a different, more dynamic, and ultimately more accomplished achievement. So many classics: "Drive My Car" and "Nowhere Man" (both omitted from the U.S. edition) merge the early combustible Beatifics to a burgeoning studio consciousness; "The Word" can be read as a pre-psych warning shot; the sitar-laden "Norwegian Wood" and the evocative "Girl" (the latter written on the last night of the sessions) stand as turning points in John Lennon's oeuvre. George finally emerges too, with the McGuinn-ish "If I Needed Someone." --Don Harrison
Customer Review: Personal Favorite
This is my favorite album from the Beatles, second favorite album of all after Plastic Ono Band. This album is the most cohesive album I have ever heard everything works perfectly with what was coming next. The songs are all perfect, even though nowhere man took a while but it has grown on me and no is one of my favorites on the album. The progression in the writing is amazing and the experimentation is not as extreme as revolver or sgt peppers but still there and that is why i like this one more than the other two, nothing is taken to far everything just falls into place so perfectly.
Highlights:
Drive My Car
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
You Won't See Me
Nowhere Man
Think for Yourself
The Word
Michelle
What Goes On
Girl
I'm Looking Through You
In My Life
Wait
If I Need Someone
and yes that is every song on the album, i said it is perfect (for me at least)
Run for Your Life
Customer Review: Simple yet entertaining!
The Beatles' songs revolve around little moments in life. The lyrics are simple and the music catchy and well-tuned to the message being conveyed by the lyrics. All the songs in this album were an instant hit with me and my wife.
Munchkin
Munchkin
Go down in the dungeon. Kill everything you meet. Backstab your friends and steal their stuff. Grab the treasure and run. Admit it. You love it. This award-winning card game, designed by Steve Jackson, captures the essence of the dungeon experience . . . with none of that stupid roleplaying stuff. You and your friends compete to kill monsters and grab magic items. And what magic items! Don the Horny Helmet and the Boots of Butt-Kicking. Wield the Staff of Napalm . . . or maybe the Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment. Start by slaughtering the Potted Plant and the Drooling Slime, and work your way up to the Plutonium Dragon . . .
Customer Review: great party game for geeks (and aspiring geeks)
I've never played Dungeons & Dragons (which this game is a satire on), but I am a huge fan of board games and card games. Munchkin is a great game for 3 or more people who don't mind being geeks for a few hours. The game combines a heavy dose of D&D satire, witty puns, pop culture, and mild adult humor. The object of the game is to outfit your character with an arsenal of unusual weapons, items, and abilities in order to slay monsters and gain levels. Your friends are doing the same, and you can benefit from both helping and hindering them. The rules can be a little daunting at first, but players pick it up quickly. Plus, all of the cards have explanations on them. With the exception of "The Need for Steed", the expansions add a great amount of variety to the cards without making the game longer or more complicated. "The Need for Steed" does add a small amount of complexity to the game, but does not make the game longer to play. Although playing with 2 players is technically possible, it is a very different experience and does not compare to playing with 3 or more players.
Customer Review: You don't have to be a geek to enjoy this game... but it helps.
A very fun game for a group who's willing to let their dork hair down.

Customer Review: Great insights!
Great insights!
First of all: quick, easy and clear assessment through internet. Results are presented to the point, detailed and personalized about one's strengths.
Each of 5 defined "strength themes' is accompanied with 10 action ideas.
This is a real must do!
Customer Review: The value-add of this book is minimal
I was disappointed by this book. I gained very little value or insights from it. The online test revealed nothing beyond what I've already learned through basic HR testing at my current job.
If you have never taken any sort of PAPI or skills inventory testing before, you might find a benefit in the online test. However, I suspect there are more valuable inventories available on the web FOR FREE. You just have to google around a bit to find them.
44 Years of the Fantastic Four
44 Years of the Fantastic Four
The 44 Years Of Fantastic Four DVD lets you revisit and relive the wild adventures of the Fantasic Four -- the First Family of superheroes! This collection brings together almost every Fantastic Four comic ever printed - from the first issue in 1961 through December of 2004. Watch them keep each other alive as grow into a family, while doing things no human before them could: Travelling to alien planets, mapping new dimensions, getting involved in interstellar wars and so much more.
Customer Review: A Fun DVD - But There is a Technical Oddity
The DVD delivers a lot of Fantastic Four fun. Even includes the comic book ads. If you are a FF comics fan you are sure to like this ... The only thing to be aware of is that, in the case of Windows-XP, you can't simply put the DVD in and watch for the opening screen to emerge. You have to boot up with the DVD already in the drive. When the boot-up is finished then you can use
Windows Explorer to view the images (The Apple Mac does not have this problem).
Customer Review: Great buy
I enjoyed reading the comics and I loved the convenience of having them all in one place. With this many comics, I never would have had the space to store them.
However, I deducted one star, but not for content. There are much nicer comic readers out there than Adobe that they can use.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day [Blu-ray]
Terminator 2: Judgment Day [Blu-ray]
After he pushed the envelope of computer-generated special effects in The Abyss, director James Cameron turned this hotly anticipated sequel to Terminator into a well-written, action-packed showcase for advanced special effects and for one of the most invincible villains ever imagined. Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a legitimate sequel: there's more story to tell about a hulking, leather-clad android (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who arrives from the future to protect a rebellious teenager and future leader (Edward Furlong) from being killed by the tenacious T-1000 robot (Robert Patrick), whose liquid-metal construction makes him seemingly unstoppable. The fate of the future lies in the balance, with Linda Hamilton (who would later marry her director) reprising her role as the rugged woman whose son will change the course of history. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Review: Great movie, video not from an HD source
The Terminator is one of the great action movies of our time. That's not what this review is about.
This review is about the video quality of this Blu-ray disc. The menus are fantastic 1080p resolution, but the actual movie looks as though it was pulled from the same source used for the DVD, which is much better than VHS, but not as good as more recent, pure HD video.
The movie is a fantastic one, but I'd say to save your money and get the standard definition DVD since the picture quality is about the same.
Customer Review: t2 hd ,.. no words to describe
i can't understand yet , how this guys can make such an old movie to look like if they got it film yesterday . this is incredible !!!

Customer Review: Great Buy, Lousy Service
Amazon was the place to buy Quickbooks 2008. Their price beat QB central by $130.
Technical service by Quickbooks with a problem which was discovered after the upgrade has been terrible. Even after hours on the phone with overseas support they could not help. Lack of quick and qualified service has cost our organization hours of man hours.

Customer Review: Where's the Score?
Not that I don't love opera (in fact, I already own 90% of this soundtrack outside of this compilation, Puccini and Verdi included), but where is the SCORE?? I love Philip Glass' work (for me, he's addictive), and I'm in agreeance with others who have rated this released album ~3 stars - we want the scoring.
Customer Review: An excellent soundtrack to a delightful movie!
Opera arias, fun songs, melancholic tunes combine to produce a fabulous soundtrack to a perfectly delightful movie. I ordered the CD immediately after viewing the movie. Since then I have listened twice and totally adore this music--every track, every song, every voice, original to the movie or renowned.
Here's what you get:
Track 1: Instrumental
Track 2: Sway, performed by Michael Buble--a great Latin number
Track 3: Celeste Aida, performed by Pavarotti
Track 4: O mio Babbino caro, performed by Renata Tebaldi--my favorite
Track 5: Phillip Glass original composition--the piano notes are bell-like
Track 6: Libiamo ne lieti calici Brindisi, Joan Sutherland
Track 7: Via con me, performed Paolo Conte--a terrific and lively song; I liked the singer so much I plan to order one of his CD's
Track 8: La donna e mobile, Joseph Calleja
Track 9: Un bel di, Renata Tebaldi, the most beautiful aria in opera (my opinion)
Track 10: Philip Glass, original composition
Track 11: Cielo e mar, Pavarotti
Track 12: Mambo Gelato, performed by Ray Gelato, another Latin number perfect for "Dancing with the Stars"
Track 13: Nessun donna, Pavarotti
Track 14: Count on My Love, performed by Liz Phair
The listing of the singers eliminates any necessity for song descriptions. Arias are arias and these are among the best. For the unlearned this CD is a perfect introduction to opera, from composers to music to performers. Then there are the two original compositions by Academy-nominated Glass, Latin numbers for dancing, and three popular singers. An all-around great soundtrack and CD for popping in the player. Enjoy!

I love to refer readers to good, new books about art. Unfortunately, there aren't very many. Most museum catalogues are written by people who spent too much time at Bard. Too many essays are simply impenetrable.

* interesting;
* informative; and
* regularly updated.
* etc.

Customer Review: Can't beat this price.
MSRP is $449 and Intuit dealers get 20% off. Try coupon code H44ED7YK for a $75 off the above price till sometime in April. Total with free shipping is $320.99. Can't find it cheaper anywhere. Just thought I'd share.

ORIGINAL MUSIC WRITTEN BY ACADEMY AWARD® NOMINEE PHILIP GLASS ALSO INCLUDES SONGS PERFORMED BY LUCIANO PAVAROTTI, MICHAEL BUBLÉ, LIZ PHAIR AND MANY MORE! From Academy Award® nominated director Scott Hicks (Shine), comes the new film NO RESERVATIONS, the remake of foreign film Mostly Martha. Master chef Kate Armstrong (Academy Award® winner Catherine Zeta-Jones--Chicago) lives her life like she runs her kitchen at a trendy Manhattan eatery--with a no-nonsense intensity that both captivates and intimidates everyone around her. Kate's perfectionist nature is put to the test when she "inherits" her nine-year-old niece Zoe (Academy Award® nominee Abigail Breslin--Little Miss Sunshine), while contending with a brash new sous-chef who joins her staff. High-spirited and freewheeling, Nick Palmer (Golden Globe® nominee Aaron Eckhart--Thank You For Smoking) couldn't be more different from Kate, yet the chemistry between them is undeniable. Warner Bros. presents NO RESERVATIONS opening wide on July 27th. The Decca soundtrack will be released on July 24th and features original music written by Academy Award® nominee Philip Glass (Notes on a Scandal, The Hours, Kundun), mixed with Italian arias performed by Luciano Pavarotti, Renata Tebaldi, Joan Sutherland, Carlo Bergonzi and Joseph Calleja as well as contemporary songs performed by Michael Bublé, Liz Phair, Paolo Conte and Ray Gelato.
