5 Reasons to Choose Audio Books over Physical Books

Did you know that audio books are becoming more and more popular by each day? For example, in 2004, over $124 million worth of audio books were sold in the UK and $120 million in Germany during 2005. Experts say that this year the market is expected to rise by 20% in Europe, and audio books seem to be even more popular in the USA.

But why are audio versions a convenient way to "read" a book?

1) You save time, because you can listen to an audio book anywhere and everywhere, and you can even do other things at the same time. You can listen when driving to and from work, when walking the dog, cycling, working around the house or at the computer, exercising, and so on. The possibilities are endless.

According to a recent survey, in the USA a person is driving an average of 1 hour and 13 minutes daily, which means over 440 hours a year for each driver, or 11 full-time work weeks. This is huge! Imagine how many things you could learn during this time by simply having your MP3 player with audio books at hand.

2) If you love reading but don't have a enough time, audio books can give you the opportunity to read many more books that you would otherwise have time for. Audio books are a great way to fill the "dead" moments we all have in our lives.

3) Audio books are good for older, ill or recovering people and can be a wonderful gift for someone in a nursing institution. This is a gift they can remember and enjoy time after time.

4) Audio books can be a blessing for blind people, disabled people or people with impaired vision. Everyone should have the chance to experience and enjoy a book and in many cases, this is the only way for such persons to do it.

Spoken books can help these people improving their education, help them developing new hobbies and habits and greatly enriching their life, both personally and professionally.

5) The most important skill a child can ever acquire is probably the ability to read, and audio books can be easily used to stimulate literacy in children. Books can be listened to by children while following the story in the paper book. Or they could listen just to gain and improve vocabulary and communication skills. If you want to instill in your child the love of reading, audio books can be a excellent start.

There are many more benefits of using audio books, but even these few reasons should be enough to convince you to enter the exciting world of the spoken books.

Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance

Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance
In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father—a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man—has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey—first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother’s family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family, confronts the bitter truth of his father’s life, and at last reconciles his divided inheritance.

Customer Review: Fascinating & brilliant--a leader for our troubled times

What a gift Barack Obama has given us! This book is useful on so many levels--as a biography of an emerging leader, and as a guide through our own introspections. When has American ever had a politician who not only could but also was willing to reveal so much in such a fascinating way? The brilliance of Barack Obama shines forth in this fine book.

Customer Review: Informed electorate

No matter whom you support in the 2008 presidential election, this book is an important read -- not to mention compelling and insightful.

Why HTML and CSS "How To" Books Suck

Most HTML and CSS books end up on bookshelves collecting dust as reference books. The last thing we need in the web development world is another HTML or CSS dictionary. While we all need one or two good references on our desks, they are not very good tutors. While I can learn about every HTML tag and every CSS selector, most books are not inherently practical enough. I need to be able to construct the WHOLE not just the parts. It does not serve the reader well if they cannot connect all the pieces together in a very practical way.

While these referential texts do include practical components(I can learn how to construct a link or how to add an image), they are often divorced from the concept of building a website as a whole.

Here is what any HTML or CSS book should accomplish:

*speak in a language beginners understand

*begin with the idea of showing how a complete website is built. Build a vision for the reader, then lead them through it step by step.

*emphasize developing CSS layouts. This is the most challenging topic and requires time and practice for beginners to master.

*practice show and tell. Most books explain the concept then have users practice. Forget that. Get the reader in there doing it first. Explain why it works later.

If at the end of reading the book, a reader has not successfully designed their first website, then the book is a failure.

Goals for book authors:

*simplicity - beginners do not need to know the battles that go on within the CSS Standards working group.

*Do not explain every possibility. Save that stuff for the appendix or another advanced book.

*Practical thru and thru. A book of well written exercises serves better than lots of discourse.

How can a beginner evaluate a book?

*Look to see how much of the book is discourse versus exercises

*Does it focus on developing a complete website or does it just give you the pieces?

The Power of Private Label Books

The Power of Private Label Books

Ever since the earliest days of the internet, there have been those seeking ways to make money on the power of the web. The power of the internet has allowed many businesspeople to enjoy great financial freedom and to escape from the boss and the rat race. There are of course many ways to make money on the internet, but in the end it all boils down to providing paying customers with products, services or information of real value. Those web based entrepreneurs who are able to provide customers with the items they want, when they want them, and at a fair price, will find themselves in a unique position to profit from the power of technology.

Of course that is easier said than done, but the good news is that there is a unique and very valuable product line that practically sells itself. This little known product line is that of private label books. These unique products can be derived from copyright free public domain works, and this derivative use is fully legal and 100% above board. Copyrights expire all the time, and this means that new public domain works are constantly being created, providing more and more opportunity for smart web entrepreneurs.

Of course there are a great many things to consider when using such public domain information to create derivative private label books, including making sure there are truly no copyright or trademark issues, making sure the information is timely, relevant and accurate, and formatting the information into a useful and user friendly package.

Many new web based entrepreneurs have found that doing all this preparation on their own is prohibitively expensive and time consuming. It can cost thousands of dollars to find, prepare and publish a single derivative public domain work into a sellable private label book package. Fortunately, there are some excellent companies that specialize in providing their members and subscribers with a steady supply of those ready to sell private label books. Having a reliable supply of top quality private label books can open up multiple streams of revenue, and it can provide the owner of the web site with a reliable source of excellent income month after month and year after year.

The Secret (Extended Edition)

The Secret (Extended Edition)
Not really a movie or documentary, The Secret is more of a video seminar, a presentation featuring a series of authors, philosophers, doctors, quantum physicists, entrepreneurs, and spiritual practitioners expounding on the powers of The Secret (probably the most well-known of the presenters is Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul and The Success Principles). What is The Secret, exactly? "That principle can be summed up in three simple words: thoughts become things," proclaims writer Mike Dooley, author of Notes from the Universe. Put it another way, it's The Power of Positive Thinking and how it can be applied to attracting more money, better health, and relationships; in short, happiness. (There is a rundown of topics on the DVD Chapters menu).

Most of the material here is given in a straightforward manner, with the presenters simply talking into the camera to address the audience directly, which is good because it avoids the trap of pretense. On the other hand, the quick edits between presenters (would it hurt to let them say more than one sentence at a time?) don't help because it reduces many of their points to palatable sound bites and aphorisms. To many viewers, this may make the program come across as a series of nice ideas not rooted in reality. Plus it's somewhat spurious to claim that The Secret was well understood and practiced by specific individuals like Plato or Shakespeare (it's well known that some of the historical figures noted didn't exactly live happy or even prosperous lives, despite their achievements). But still, the primary message is one of positivity and hope for everyone. So what to make of it? In the end, programs like this generally find an audience that is open to the message, and many will probably find it to be a source of inspiration. Others will approach it with a good deal of skepticism or dismiss it as another way of marketing happiness the masses. It simply won't resonate with everyone, but if it resonates with you, you're likely to enjoy it and get a lot out of it. Those looking for more on The Secret might want to check out the companion book by Rhonda Byrne. --Daniel Vancini

Customer Review: NEGATIVITY NEVER GOT ANYONE ANYWHERE - Cheesy but WONDERFUL

It can be cheesy - you know the music and the sound bites, but seriously, this is a GREAT DVD to OWN. So some of us may know the secret or think we know it, but it helps to have this DVD on hand to watch to inspire us and remind us of what we have to do, what we are capable of, and how we are the makers of our own destinies. I found it inspiring and although you think things like "Follow Your Bliss" and "You are the designer of your own destiny" may be cheesy or obvious, the messages in THE SECRET are ones that we may think we know, but forget or really don't live by. I watched this online and want to buy the DVD to have on hand to watch at home when I start to get negative and feel defeated. It's funny that this DVD is meant to help people see the positive and forget the negative and these reviewers all focused on the negative. Maybe they should be watching this DVD over and over. Buy it and Watch it over and over!

Customer Review: Life altering

This movie, along with the book will change your outlook on life for the better. Put the ideas and thoughts to practice and the world is your oyster.

Even if you're the happiest person on earth, this will make you happier.

It's quite remarkable.

Every living person, young and old, should see this film and read the book of the same name.

What a wonderful world it would be.

Nineteen Minutes

Nineteen Minutes

Jodi Picoult, bestselling author of My Sister's Keeper and The Tenth Circle, pens her most riveting book yet, with a startling and poignant story about the devastating aftermath of a small-town tragedy.

Sterling is an ordinary New Hampshire town where nothing ever happens--until the day its complacency is shattered by an act of violence. Josie Cormier, the daughter of the judge sitting on the case, should be the state's best witness, but she can't remember what happened before her very own eyes--or can she? As the trial progresses, fault lines between the high school and the adult community begin to show--destroying the closest of friendships and families. Nineteen Minutes asks what it means to be different in our society, who has the right to judge someone else, and whether anyone is ever really who they seem to be.

Customer Review: So well written, a tough topic

I enjoyed this book and I wasn't sure that I would. I had read "My Sister's Keeper" and was blown away with the story. I had not read anything by Jodi Picoult until then, so I wanted to read another of her books. "Nineteen Minutes" is such a very difficult subject to write a story about, but after I began, I couldn't put it down. I did'nt care for the ending but others may love it.

Customer Review: Nothing special for those accustomed to Picoult's work

Nineteen Minutes was certainly an entertaining book - I finished all 400+ pages in a weekend. However, I can't say I continued reading the book because I was interested in the characters or the plot, but mostly because I couldn't tear myself away from Picoult's multitude of ridiculous stereotypes and adages about high school life. Picoult lays it on thick, to say the least; as a high school student myself, I can't say I've ever witnessed (or even heard of) 99 percent of the occurrences Picoult describes in Nineteen Minutes. Every "jock" is tall, muscular, and witty; every "cool girl" has long blond hair. I wanted to slap each and every character at some point in the book - not because I was emotionally invested in them, as is usually the case with Picoult books, but just because people like that simply don't exist. While such characters aren't always a book's downfall, I found them very distracting in this novel.

Picoult also strays from legal realities when she insists on keeping Alex, the judge with a maternal conflict of interest, on the bench for a portion of the trial. Even more bothersome was Picoult's attempt to justify it to her readers by repeatedly exposing them to Alex's questionable thought process on the matter. This only caused me to distance myself further from the book and its characters.

In short, the book just read more and more like a bad teen novel as it went on, which was disappointing. The book was more frustrating than anything; it definitely showed potential, but was thrown off course by a lack of research and shallow, stereotypical characters. Definitely not Picoult's best work, but worth reading, I suppose.

Curvelle-Isatori Weightloss Formula For Women, 200ct (2 Month Supply)

Curvelle-Isatori Weightloss Formula For Women, 200ct (2 Month Supply)
Curvelle was designed specifically for a womans needs when it comes to losing weight, healthfully. Weight loss is not only about losing inches but also looking and feeling great and, more importantly, being healthy and radiant.

Customer Review: I think it works.

I have been using it for 2 weeks, I lost 3-4 pounds. I do my normal diet routine: exercising 3 times a week (just 30 minutes) and eating 5 small meals daily. I definitely lost more weight faster than without the pills.

I definitely feel more satisfied even eating less. I do feel more energized without much of side effects. However, I feel really tired when the pills wear off.

Customer Review: What is it suppose to do? (REVISION)

On my third week of Curvelle. No results what-so-ever! No curbing of my appetite, no energy, no weight loss. I exercise throughout the week and eat a lowcarb diet. So maybe I can't expect anymore results, I don't know.

UPDATE////////OK, now into my second month and have lost 3 lbs!?? But, I am losing inches like crazy. My body seems to be getting smaller and slimmer. However the weight is not moving down. I think I will try a few more months and see what happens.

Black Contact Paper, 18" x 75'

Black Contact Paper, 18" x 75'
Adds decorative accents to any horizontal or vertical surface. Each roll features an easy-to-peel liner and an adhesive that allows it to be repositioned during installation without leaving a sticky residue. It’s easy to apply, easy to remove, and easy to keep clean. Simply cut to length and shape for a custom application.

Customer Review: contact paper has a zillion uses!

I have always liked the simplicity of using contact paper to "clean up" otherwise old or messy looking spaces. I am not saying that I would use contact paper to cover furniture in the home if you are wanting a classy or "rich" look! But, as a school teacher teaching in a very old building with very old tables that are dull and mismatched and have little finish left on them to clean them properly...a little contact paper really can pull together the "look" and it is very easy to clean! I have used contact paper to cover gross looking tiles on classroom walls, to dress up my old chipped desk, dented file cabinet and even to cover containers such as margarine tubs or juice cans - there is such a variety of colors and patterns out there that you can coordinate both to come up with a solution to a drab decor! It sticks smoothly and evenly, takes a short time to complete the job, wears well over time (as long as you are careful not to purposely abuse the area or put it on something that will obviously get mistreated!)

Children appreciate a classroom that is fresh and interesting and "fun" to work in....contact paper has always come through for me in these 16 years of teaching and one more thing....you can change it out inexpensively as you wish.

Take a Look at These Scary Halloween Books

My friends and I have tried may various ways to ?fete? Halloween. Twenty years ago, we would joyfully don our Halloween costumes. Wearing the Halloween costumes was such a wonderful experience.

We would of course consume our favorite Halloween foods and drinks, but what we were most eager to do is to take out the books that we used to call Halloween books. We took turns reading to the others just to scare them or at least give them the willies.

Our favorite collection of Halloween books is undoubtedly represented by Edgar Allen Poes books. These Halloween books will certainly have the same effect now, as they did before evn though it's years later.

I loved to read my favorite short stories - The Fall of the House of Usher and The Masque of the Red Death. The first one was about a haunted house while the second was about a Halloween party in a house where one imagines and one is trapped, with other people.

If you do not prefer to read Halloween books but you want something scarier and terrifying like the occult genre, a metaphysical, Para psychological, real people haunted by real ghosts and others like these, it is better to take true scary stories. I will recommend you the following:

Amityville Horror written by Jay Anson this book is really quite creepy. The book is based on true events. It has a photo of the real house on its cover. The windows and the doors make the house look alive. They are placed in a way that gives the illusion of a face. The book tells the story of a man who killed his family and of the new family who moved in and became possessed by the ghosts of the former house inhabitants. This is the first Halloween book that I remember when hear the words Halloween books.

The Shining written by Steven King most of Steven King books are good enough to be Halloween books but this one is so realistic that it makes you terrified. This Halloween book tells the story of a writer who is staying in a locked hotel with no electricity in New England full of ghosts, while outside there is a snowstorm.

The Mephisto Waltz by Fred Mustard Steward this one is a very good Halloween book. This Halloween book tells the story of a woman who is trying to get out but the guard dogs, Doberman Pinschers, are tracking her in a terrifying mannerFree Reprint Articles, whenever she tries to get out.

I do not approve these Halloween books to be read to children. There are just my favorite Halloween books for adults. Halloween books like The Happy Pumpkins will not make me tremble of fear for sure!
